What a GTM engineer isn't

A GTM engineer applies engineering and AI to go-to-market. That means the market model, the account data, the experiments, and the systems that put your team in the right conversations every week. Because the title is new, people hire one expecting something else. Here are the six I hear most, and what to hire if that's what you need.

Not an SDR

An SDR's job is conversations: dials, emails, meetings booked. A GTM engineer's job is to make those conversations easier to get and better when they happen. That means the right accounts, the right reason to call, and the research done before the rep picks up.

I'll get on the phone myself. I do it for one or two clients at a time, because hearing real calls is how I learn what to build. That's a test, though, not headcount. If you need someone dialing all day, hire an SDR. I can help with the screens and the ramp plan.

Not a RevOps admin or a ticket queue

If the plan is "we'll send the GTM engineer our backlog of field changes and report requests," you'll get a very expensive admin. The point is to make the backlog smaller. The list for a campaign becomes a query anyone can run, and reps get answers where they already work.

I do touch the CRM a lot: sync jobs, routing, process design. Who owns what gets agreed with RevOps before I change anything.

Not a list vendor

Lists are part of the work. Enrichment tools, contact waterfalls, and verification are all in my kit. But a list on its own is a commodity, and you can buy one tomorrow. What a GTM engineer adds is the reason behind it: which segments are real, why each account is scored the way it is, and a test to check that the scoring holds up. If all you need is contacts, buy data.

Not an agency

An agency sells an outcome, usually booked meetings, and keeps the machine. I know that model well because I founded one, Punch GTM. It's the right call when you want meetings and don't want to own anything.

A GTM engineer leaves the machine with you. Everything I build ships with documented playbooks, and the data, tools, and systems sit in your accounts. When the engagement ends, it keeps running.

Not a replacement for a sales leader

A sales leader owns the number, the team, and the calls on who gets hired and coached. I don't take any of that. My work is to give that person better information faster: is this segment worth a rep, is this message landing, where is the funnel leaking. They decide what to do with it. If your company has no one in that seat, fix that first. A GTM engineer with no one to report to builds things nobody uses.

Not an AI magic button

AI is how one person now does what used to take a team, and it's most of how I build. It doesn't remove the need to know your market. The inputs still matter: your best closed deals, why buyers started looking, what almost killed the deal, your call recordings. Junk in still gives you junk out, just faster.

So what is it?

The shortest version is someone who sits with your revenue leaders in sales and marketing, starts from the number you're trying to hit, and builds the systems that get you there. It looks like three things:

  1. Map the market. TAM models and segments built from real signals, then tested.
  2. Build the source of truth. Accounts and customers in one place, synced to every channel.
  3. Run what compounds. Campaigns and experiments where each result improves the next.

Cold email is in there, running in the background. It's just not the job. The full list of what I do is on the services page.

If you're working out whether you need a GTM engineer or one of the roles above, send me what you sell and the number you're after through the intake form, or email joel@pushtomain.xyz. I'll tell you which one I think fits, even if it isn't me.

FAQ

What does a GTM engineer do?

Applies engineering and AI to go-to-market: market models and segmentation, account data, experiments, and the systems behind outbound, marketing, and rep prep.

Is a GTM engineer the same as an SDR?

No. An SDR has the conversations. A GTM engineer builds what makes them easier to get and better when they happen.

Is a GTM engineer the same as RevOps?

They overlap on the CRM and tools. RevOps runs and maintains the revenue systems. A GTM engineer builds new ones and runs experiments, with ownership agreed up front.

Is a GTM engineer just someone who builds lists with enrichment tools?

No. Enrichment tools are part of the kit. The job is deciding which accounts matter and why, then testing it.

Should I hire a GTM engineer or an outbound agency?

An agency sells meetings and keeps the system. A GTM engineer builds the system in your accounts and hands it over with playbooks.

Can AI replace a GTM engineer?

AI does a lot of the build. Someone still has to know the market, pick the inputs, and decide what to test.
